Online may be the best choice for military personnel
Online college is often the only option for active duty US military personnel deployed overseas. Studying online can make a college education possible for dependents and spouses who are far from a college campus, who work irregular schedules or who lack reliable transportation. These issues are also a frequent concern of veterans who may be stateside but unable to fit on-campus college classes into their lives.
At Globe University/Minnesota School of Business (GU/MSB), we have a dedicated Military Student Services department staffed by two retired U.S. Army First Sergeants. They know what is important to military personnel and their families. Their goal is to help military students overcome whatever obstacles they face when trying to complete a college program. Wherever you are, you can get in touch with them at veterans@globeuniversity.edu or call toll free, 1-866-342-3505.
Our military services department
Our military services staff will be your advocates throughout your college career at GU/MSB. They will help you by:
- Evaluating your military training and previous education credits for possible credit for prior learning
- Determining the educational military benefits for which you are eligible
- Working with you, your education services officer and other outside parties to help you select a college degree program and reach your academic goals
Online college and the military
Obtaining a college education when in the military is hard under any circumstances. You move frequently and are seldom at a base long enough to make meaningful progress at a local college. Online college is particularly useful when you are active duty military stationed abroad. Online education provides you with programs you can continue when you return home, wherever you are.
Military personnel deployed to a war zone often think that working toward a college degree is impossible. However, people in all branches of the military, including those in war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, have successfully completed classes through the GU/MSB online division. The level of online support we provide makes it possible.
Military scholarships
We offer the following scholarship programs exclusively for military personnel, veterans and their families:
- Military Advantage Scholarship. This scholarship awards a 10% discount on tuition and books to military personnel and their families.
- Military Service Scholarship. If you were severely injured in Iraq or Afghanistan and are participating in the Department of Defense Severely Injured Joint Operations Center, you (or a family member) may be able to receive a scholarship of up to $5000 depending on your degree program.
- Purple Heart Scholarship. If you were wounded while serving in the Gulf wars, or if you are a family member of a service member killed in action during these wars, you may be eligible for this scholarship that awards the cost of tuition and fees remaining after all other federal, state and military financial aid have been applied to your tuition bill.
- Military Active Duty Scholarship. This program is for qualified students who are active duty service members and their families. Recipients of this scholarship will receive an amount equal to the difference between the current tuition per credit charge and $250, reducing the military student’s tuition rate to $250 per credit. Restrictions apply, so consult our military student services staff to learn more.
In addition to helping you complete the applications for these scholarships, our military student services staff can advise you about other sources of financial aid, including your military benefits.
Military absence
In addition to ensuring that all online students have the resources they need to succeed, GU/MSB has developed policies to accommodate students in the military whose circumstances might make it difficult for them to complete coursework. For example, students who are activated or who are assigned to a sensitive military mission might not be able to log in to their online classes as required. If such a situation occurs, the military student can send an e-mail or letter to the online education department indicating the length of time he or she intends to be off-line. The instructor may assign a grade of I (Incomplete) if enough course work has been completed successfully.
Military withdrawals
Students called to active military duty who cannot complete the current quarter will receive a grade of WM (Withdrawal for Military Duty). Students will receive a full tuition refund for all courses for which the student is enrolled at the time of activation.
Serving those who serve
Our military absence and military withdrawal policies are examples of the way GU/MSB takes care of students who are active duty military, dependents and veterans. Our college is grateful to those who serve in the military. We are dedicated to providing the services they need to succeed.
