Frequently Asked Questions about Online Classes

What is online education?

Online education is the term used to describe distance learning that takes place when students and instructors are not physically in the same location and classes are offered over the Internet. You have the flexibility to learn on your own schedule. However, you are required to log into your course(s) at least once a week and you are responsible for creating and maintaining your own schedule for reading, studying, completing assignments, and participating in group discussions. The opportunity to develop knowledge while collaborating with other students from around the world is available through online education. In this environment, the instructor functions as a guide and mentor.

Who can take online classes?

If you have a high school diploma or GED and meet the admissions requirements of Globe University/Minnesota School of Business (GU/MSB), you can take online courses.

Do I need a computer to take courses online?

Online courses require a computer and access to the Internet. To log on, you will need the following:

  • MS Windows XP or Vista operating system and Microsoft Office Professional 2007
  • Reliable Internet access, preferably high speed Internet access through cable or broadband
  • Internet Explorer (AOL does not work)
  • Access to web-based e-mail. GU/MSB provides all enrolled students an e-mail account during orientation

Is financial aid available for online classes?

Financial aid, in the form of scholarships, loans and grants, is available to all eligible online students.

Are online classes easier than residential classes?

No. Online classes are generally more challenging than residential classes. Online learning requires a higher level of self-motivation and discipline. Projects need to be completed on time and it’s hard to catch up if you get behind.

Is it easy to use the online classroom environment?

The online learning management system, Blackboard™, is similar to e-mail, your computer at work or any basic software program. The Online Learner Orientation Course is designed to provide new online students with the skills and knowledge they will need to navigate online classes. This orientation familiarizes the student with the GU/MSB online environment and the resources available to help students succeed in online courses.

The orientation course is available to students 2 weeks before their first online class begins. They must complete it within 2 weeks of confirmed registration in the online course.

How do I interact with my teachers and classmates?

GU/MSB online students find one of the most satisfying aspects of our online environment is the opportunity to interact with faculty, academic advisors and other students. They use e-mail, IM, chat, and formal online discussion groups to stay in touch.

How do I get in touch with an online instructor?

Faculty members post their e-mail addresses in Blackboard™ so that students can communicate with them throughout the quarter. They also post a telephone number for their voice mail, which they check regularly so they can respond to student questions.

What if I’m not ready for online classes?

GU/MSB also offers hybrid classes that combine the best of online and on-campus courses. These allow you to have face-to-face contact with instructors and classmates and enjoy greater flexibility in scheduling. We also provide an Online Course Readiness Assessment that will help you decide whether online education is for you.

How do I apply for online courses at MSB?

If you have decided that GU/MSB online classes are right for you, you can apply now. And if you would like help exploring financial aid options or deciding which online program is right for you, call GU/MSB’s online division at 877-609-8889 or send an e-mail to get started.
