Career opportunities are increasing in the field

The number of jobs in fields related to criminal justice continues to grow. The prison population in Minnesota and the United States continues to grow. There are jobs that did not exist 10 years ago, such as airport security positions. An increased focus on child protection and domestic violence prevention means that there are more opportunities in protective services. A greater emphasis on victim’s rights has led to advocacy positions in the courts.

Why an online associate degree in criminal justice?

Online students can continue working or taking care of their kids. Online study also helps students save money by avoiding the expense of commuting or paying for childcare. They have access to a robust support system that includes an online HelpDesk, an online library and the assistance of our career services department before and after graduation. Obtaining a college education online gives people the chance to go to school even if they have little time.

A program designed by experienced professionals in the field

We developed our online criminal justice associate degree with the help of a program advisory committee made up of experienced professionals in the field. The members of this committee — law enforcement officials, court personnel and victims' advocates — understand the skills and knowledge that are needed for success.

Coursework in our online criminal justice associate degree program

Students take classes in topics such as:

  • Investigation
  • Security
  • Corrections
  • Behavioral sciences
  • Protective services
  • Legal terminology
  • Legal research
  • Criminal law
  • Constitutional issues

They also take general education courses and electives. Many of the courses in this program will transfer smoothly to our bachelor’s degree program in criminal justice.

Can I become a police officer?

In most states, including Minnesota, graduates of two-year degree programs who plan on becoming law enforcement officers may require additional training beyond the associate degree, as determined by the POST Board. Some law enforcement agencies offer POST training to qualified job candidates. Depending on the job and the jurisdiction, graduates of programs like those at GU/MSB-Online are often qualified for the POST training offered by law enforcement agencies. We can help you identify organizations that offer this training.
